Ahhhh the dreaded “D” word we all know and hate. The one word that will take you from where you are to where you want to go. So, if that’s the case why do we all cringe every time we hear it? Well for one reason it’s like a broken record. We have heard the success gurus and every personal growth book known to WO-man talk about it. At this point, it’s almost stomach-churning to hear anyone mention the word. However, no matter how tired we are of being subjected to it the truth is it really does bridge the gap between what we want and where we are currently. Look I don’t care who you are in the world there is something you want. Whether it’s a pizza this Friday night or a million bucks we all have desires we want to be fulfilled. If up until this point you have been scratching your head trying to understand the so-called “secrets ” of success. Its been in front of you all along…however, we choose to ignore it because it requires WORK! Here are 5 reasons it is crucial to develop discipline for success, and why you need to start NOW!
So what the heck does discipline really mean anyway?
So before we talk about why you NEED it, let’s talk about what it is because there can be MANY different meanings. Now, one way to describe it can be a good old pat on the booty if you’ve been bad! And while Jennifer Aniston looks so cute in this Friends episode showing Ross who’s boss that’s NOT what we are talking about here.
We are merely talking about the definition picked right out of Merriam Webster. I actually LOVE a couple of the ways it is defined but my top two are…
Training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character AND to train or develop by instruction and exercise especially in self-control.
Yep, that’s RIGHT! Self-Control…and what does self-control mean? Restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions, or desires. Hunny! This has hit the nail on the head!
So in a nutshell discipline means doing things you don’t want to do even if you do not feel like it. It means to not allow emotions to get in the way of your goals. You know those bad habits and lies we tell ourselves that keep us from making progress like…
- I’m too tired
- I don’t have time
- My favorite show is on
- I’ll do it later
- I’ll start tomorrow
- It won’t make a difference
- It will take too long
Girl…just STOP! Listen, you have SO many gifts inside of you! The world needs what you have to offer, but we will never see it if you don’t allow your true capabilities to shine. It’s time to go full out! Stop making yourself small…you are strong and POWERFUL! Walk-in your purpose!
So, lets dive right into the reasons discipline is crucial to success.
1.) Discipline enables you to withstand temptation.
Yep! Every day we have choices to make. We know what things will bring us closer to our goals, and what things won’t however, more often than not we choose the wrong option. One of the main reasons why we do this is because of temptation. As humans, we are lured in by pleasure, and give in to our weaknesses. I mean there is enough stress in life. The last thing we want to do is get off work and have to do something else that we don’t really want to do right? However, if you cultivate the art of discipline you will not allow the temptation to sway you in your decisions.
2.) Discipline requires you to keep your commitments.
Have you ever started something then stopped because it wasn’t happening quickly enough or the reward wasn’t worth the work? If so no need to be too hard on yourself, we’ve all been there. Although, at some point, you must realize that anything worth having requires commitment.
Heck, there are MANY things that require a solid commitment, things like marriages, careers, kids. Well to tell you the truth they don’t require commitment if you don’t want them to be successful but I think you do so that doesn’t apply here.
Doing what you say you will do long after you said it is a special ingredient in the success recipe. You see when you operate off of discipline and not emotion then you have no time to allow your feelings or mindset to stop you.
Have you ever heard how when someone works out they give up in there mind before their body actually ever gives up? Same goes here…if you can push past your thoughts, and adhere to your commitments then success will no doubt be in your future.
3.) Discipline for success requires that you think logically instead of emotionally.
Now I am in no way telling you to have a heart that is cold as ice! There is a time and place to be compassionate and lead with your heart. However, when we are talking about pushing past our limiting self-beliefs, and emotions this requires us to use our head.
You must see beyond what you feel and go on what you KNOW. It’s like this you don’t feel like going to the gym today. This is a thought based on emotion. However, you know that if you DO go to the gym today this will get you closer to your goal weight. Catch my drift?

4.) It produces confidence.CLICK HERE PLEASE!!!
I am a confidence junkie, and if you feel like you lack it then you have come to the right place. Everything starts with having confidence, and if you have a lack of it you will give in when times get tough! However, being disciplined helps to produce confidence. When you do all the things we have mentioned above like thinking critically, withstanding temptation, and staying committed, you have no choice but to gain confidence. Once you have confidence you will be unstoppable! This is why it is imperative to cultivate it because success is super difficult without it.
5.) Self-discipline promotes perseverance.
When you have a strong sense of discipline you embrace the struggle. You gain an understanding that good things take, time, hard work, and most importantly belief! You unenroll in the “whiners club” and stand up to be the strong woman that’s inside of you.
Growing a good understanding of self-discipline allows you to embrace challenges as part of the journey. Challenges make you grow stronger, and are necessary to achieve your full potential in everything. There is no need to run from pain. Run to pain, and everything you desire will happen for you. Perseverance is key!
