How to easily start a blog
By Brittany Cherrell
So, you want to start a blog huh?
Here’s the deal…When I first started my blog I made a ton of mistakes! I got fed up with designing a website, almost pulled my hair out trying to be a “coder” and almost puked every time I heard someone say starting a blog is easy as 1-2-3.
The truth is blogging, or starting any business for that matter can be tough! (which is why you need to have the proper mindset going into it.) However, now that I have learned from all the mistakes I have made it has given me the ability to teach you.
Don’t get me wrong I still make mistakes each and every day, but that is the beauty of the process. I went from a perfectionist to a good enoughist, and that has served me well mentally.
Now this post is meant to be the bare bones because Lord knows there is a lot that goes into this stuff, and heck we just need to get the darn website up and running first…am I right?
So, I will have future posts dedicated to going more in-depth about how this whole blog thing works but for today, let’s get a good understanding of what you need to get started. So you can plant your seeds, and get some green rolling in.
This post is assuming you have already thought of a topic to write about, and perhaps a possible name for your blog.
If not no worries…
You can still set this stuff up, and then decide who your target audience is later.
Here is how to easily start a blog.
1.) Pick a few people to guide you and stay put
Look, take it from me…you will go absolutely insane if you follow the advice from every single blogging guru online. Just for giggles just open up FB do a quick search for “blogging” and magically see a million people, groups, and pages that pop up with the “secret” to making your first million with their how-to start a blog formula.
Now don’t get me wrong, I know people that make pretty hefty salaries blogging, and it is 100% possible but the main thing to understand is that you have to have focus.
If you bite every time a carrot is dangled in front of your face you will get overwhelmed too quickly. A good rule of thumb is to pick a few people you want to learn from and stay there.
If after a while you feel as though you have learned all you can from that person and want a different perspective that is when you can maybe trade them in for someone else. (that sounds kind of weird, but you catch my drift)
However, since you are in the learning phase it is important to invest your time and money into people who know what they are doing. This can only help you in the long run. It will make your learning curve easier with less frustration.
2.) Hosting is the rent you pay online to start a blog
You will hear a million theories on who has the best hosting, and then why you don’t need hosting. The truth is you don’t need any of this stuff…
You are serious about making money.
I am all about keeping this thing real and I would never suggest anything that I haven’t personally used as an example. So rest assured the things I am talking to you about are things I have personally implemented in my business.
There are some things you may be able to take a “shortcut” with but in my personal opinion, the things we will discuss today are not.
I don’t care what your blog is about if it is slow as molasses and glitchy you will have a tough time retaining readership.
Which we don’t want darling
Before I give you my suggestion for hosting let me elaborate a little on what “hosting” means.
Hosting is basically the rent you pay for your blog to be on the internet. It’s your space in cyberspace. It’s the place where your website and files are housed.
Yep, all houses whether digital or literal cost money.
So, Bluehost is a great affordable way to get your hosting, and WordPress site wrapped up into one. The process is seamless, and you can enroll and choose your domain name (directly through them if it’s available)
*If you can help it avoid going through another domain company first to get your URL because many times you have to wait 60 or even 90 days to transfer it*
3.) Pick a pre-built customizable theme
Take it from me…this was the number one frustration for me at the beginning.
I started with a fully customizable drag and drop theme which was great, at first.
If you’re like me you have zero coding experience. The great thing to know is that with themes that are already built for you the design is already there all you have to do is put your touch on it.
With drag and drop, it’s basically a white page and you have to make everything look the way it needs to. Which can cause major sizing issues and just a plain ugly site.
Not to mention this takes a lot of time in the beginning, and you don’t want to spend too much time on design at first as it’s almost guaranteed that your design will change as you evolve over time.
Now there are a million themes to choose from.
If you like feminine themes (like me) check out Bluchic. They have some beautiful themes to choose from at an affordable price that will make your site look professionally done with the touch of a finger.
4.) Don't skip the legal stuff!
With anything you invest in you must protect it because we all know folks will try to take you to “Judge Judy” for anything these days.
Having your blog legally protected is like a sigh of relief. You can write and promote knowing that you are abiding by the law, and won’t have to worry about any sheriff knocking on your door with some summons…
I know you’re probably thinking okay well I’m not trying to pay a fortune to retain an attorney and trust me I feel you.
You’re in this thing to make money, right?
When I first started blogging I was put on to an amazing attorney who makes affordable legal pages for bloggers.
Her name is Amira, and she has built an amazing six-figure business protecting the online investment of many entrepreneurs.
Here templates are fully customizable, and you can just add your info into her templates and be protected in no time.
You can get all of the information on her templates HERE.
Putting it all together
Okay, so by now you are well on your way.
You have a blog name and niche picked out, you have your hosting online, a theme to customize and write blog posts in, and the legal pages to protect you.
