So I know what you’re thinking… self-care isn’t REALLY all about a quiet bubble bath or a mani-pedi? What about oiling your cuticles or exfoliating? Well yes and no, because self-care IS about making yourself a priority and taking care of you. However, it is much deeper than that. The better you can get an understanding of the different levels of self-care the quicker you can replenish your cup!
I mean really?! Who wouldn’t want to feel refreshed and energized all the time? Heck, even the confidence that comes with it is worth it. When you take care of yourself on the inside you have no choice but to exude it on the outside. So, since up until this point you may have had a superficial definition of self-care let’s dig a little deeper so you can truly understand the benefits.
Self-care is how you take your power back!
If you have felt like a rundown mess, everything is about to change for you. You see when you realize that your well-being is just as important as everyone around you then you will be in a place of power.
There is no doubt that there are many responsibilities we have as women. However, we have the tendency to put others before ourselves thinking that it is what we must do.
Although, it is true that we must sacrifice some things for the benefits of others; We should never sacrifice ourselves in the process. Doing this makes us give all of our purpose away which in turn makes us feel victimized, and bitter. Walking around being a sour grape is not the way to live my dear.
When you acknowledge that you are important too, this gives you all the power needed to make self care a priority.
Practicing self-care makes you more equipped to help others.
Yep, there is more to self-care than what meets the eye! When you are not bogged down by stress, and lack of time for YOU, you are better for everyone else.
Think about it! Have you ever slept in on a Saturday morning, and then woke up feeling ready to conquer the world? Maybe you made an extravagant breakfast or cleaned the house more than you normally would. You can chop this up to the feeling of being refreshed which is an element of self-care.
Self-care has so many benefits other than just being refreshed. (even though that is a pretty good feeling!) Let’s chat a little about the benefits you may NOT be aware of.
The benefits of self care.
Better Immunity– Did you realized that when you practice self-care it can keep your immunity up which helps you NOT get sick easily. Not only can you stay healthy but not getting sick means less time sitting on the bench to recover from a cold. Sounds like a win/win to me!
More Energy– Ok I think we’ve beaten this one to a pulp, but who doesn’t want to feel good?! I mean to do things without dragging or needing those 8 cups of coffee in a day (yes I actually know someone who drinks that much)
Positive Attitude– if you didn’t know by now most folks avoid negative nancy like the plague. Who wants to be around someone that zaps all the energy out of you every day? However, practicing self-care will make you shine bright like a diamond (thanks Ri-Ri)
Patience– I am proud to say I have developed this virtue however, when you are dealing with other folks (especially kids) this one can get away from you. If you feel good most likely you will be able to tolerate things a little more than if you didn’t.
Stress reduction– Stress can really wreak havoc on your body. Don’t think so? Click HERE, However, if you are putting your well-being first you can reduce the effects of it in a MAJOR way. Not being in a state of stress can automatically make you happier.
Confidence Baby! One of my MOST favorite words. Confidence in life is key and when you feel good, you will be the most confident Lady on planet earth! Need I say more?
Types of Self-Care
Okay, so here is where we can really break it down because there is more than just one category to self-care. If you never realized this I KNOW your mind is like BLOWN right now…isn’t it? It really is true because there is more to us as women then cute outfits, a fierce blowout, and makeup. We are amazing creatures and have many complex features and needs.
Sometimes putting on a trendy dress doesn’t always help you emotionally, or exercising doesn’t boost your social life…catch my drift? There are 6 main types of self-care we will discuss. You will have a good understanding of how to take care of you when we’re done.
The 6 categories
1.) Emotional– This includes activities that help you process and reflect on your emotions. Stuff like journaling, music, being creative.
2.) Practical– This is like preventative maintenance. These are tasks you do to reduce the likelihood of stressful situations. This includes things like creating a budget, taking an online course, organizing your shoe rack.
3.) Mental– No brainer here! Anything that stimulates your mind, or calms it. Reading, playing sudoku, you get the point.
4.) Social– Activities that nurture and deepen relationships. Date night, girls night out, a road trip with friends. These things would all fall into this category.
5.) Spiritual– Connecting to yourself and a higher power, and allowing you to see a bigger picture. It can be religious but doesn’t have to be. Activities like meditation, yoga, self-reflection, all fit here.
6.) Physical– The one that first comes to mind when thinking about self-care. Appearance, bubble baths, doctor’s appts, you get the point.
How to put it in practice.
Okay cool, so now we have broken down the self-care conundrum. At this point, you should have a better understanding of why it’s a multitude of different things. You are made up of all sorts of elements which is why one form of self-care won’t meet all of your needs.
However, knowing isn’t enough! You must put it into practice. It’s time to put together a self-care routine that works for you. Be cautious not to do too many things at once as this can become daunting, and stop you before you start!
In order for you to reap the benefits of self-care you must make it a habit. You need to schedule a time for it just like you do with everything else. Once you start doing this you will be so glad you did!
Until next time Ladies…
So Many Blessings,
