Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t WORK without Setting Goals too!
Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t WORK without setting goals too? Here’s the scoop! It’s 11:59 pm on December 31st and you just can’t wait for the clock to strike 12. You are eager to get started on all those New Year’s resolutions you have set. You feel excited, refreshed, and motivated to do all the things you said you were going to do last year and didn’t. So, what is going to be different this year?
Are your going to sign up for that gym membership again? You know damn well you will only go up until MLK day and then fizzle out.
Or maybe you will start that new diet and buy all those health-conscious foods. Only to crack as soon as your girlfriend asks you to go out to your favorite Italian restaurant. If this sounds like YOU then you should continue to read further….
Let’s Talk About the Difference Between Setting Goals and Resolutions.
A Resolution according to the good ole dictionary is labeled as a firm decision to do or not to do something.
Goals however are described as the result or achievement toward which effort is directed.
So, a resolution is just a statement of what you want to do. A goal is the achievement of that statement by what actions you will take.
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty here.
Weather we want to admit it or not we all know for sure that nothing worth having happens without effort.
Bird’s don’t catch the worm by staying in the nest all day. God provides the worm, but the bird must fly out to get it!
The same rings true here. You may want to be a size four, but just saying that is NOT going to make that happen.
You must get honest with yourself on the exact actions that you will need to take in order to do this.
Write Your Goals Down
This step is imperative to the entire process. Goals are something you should view daily to remind yourself of what you want to achieve. It is important to keep them in the forefront of your mind so that you can focus on them daily. Getting them out of your head and on paper is a MUST!
However, its more than just saying “I want to be a size four” because that again is a resolution statement.
Develop a Plan for Setting Your Goals
You have successfully written your goals down appropriately. Now need to put a plan in place to execute those steps right?
This is a crucial step because without this you will succumb to the same forces as you did last year and quit before you are ahead. My advice to you is to…
GET A PLANNER!
Now initially when you are just starting out or if you are low on cash it’s ok to get just any planner. As far as I’m concerned any planning is better than no planning. Ideally, you want to get one with room to write an action plan for the day.
If you are a techy and prefer a phone or mobile device that’s okay too! I have included some apps that I do not personally use because I am a pen and paper girl, but that I have researched, and they seem worth a peek!
I heard these words by Jim Rohn years ago and they stuck with me like glue “Run the day or the day runs you.”
You must tell the day what is going to happen and commit to that each and every day.
The truth is hours add up to days, days to weeks, weeks to months. Before you know it, you KILLED it in 2020 and are on next level status going into 2021!
Goals are achieved by doing the steps day in and day out.
Have you ever sat and thought about how much your life has changed in the last five years? Although, the day to day tasks seem the same, right?
Success is predictable, and I promise you will SEE a difference.
Make sure your value system is in check!
SO MUCH YES!! If you need some clarity on what I mean by this here are some examples…
These are just some core values that are going to need to be either enforced or developed to help you achieve goals.
Here are a couple of examples…
If you want to get to that size four it will require discipline to go to the gym weekly, and will cause you to sacrifice that late night taco bell run.. SEE?
I will go more in depth on those values in another post, but you get the general idea.
Visualize all of your goals already being attained. Meditate, be silent, or whatever you need to do to have the correct Mindset to embrace what you truly want.
I KNOW you can do it! I am rooting for you!
So Many Blessings,
